I’m going to be getting married in Las Vegas REALLY SHORTLY, and I’ve been somewhat obsessed over finding a good, slightly messy updo to wear for my impending nuptials. I say slightly messy, because I’ve never been a fan of the more formal, tightly pulled back and high on the head updos of yesteryear. I’ve actually had my hair done like that before for weddings I’ve been in, by professionals, and the result just doesn’t look very becoming. It looks almost too severe, whereas a nice, lossely pulled back, slightly tousled updo looks more “me”, and more relaxed.

Especially for a more informal wedding, a messier updo is going to be the ticket. So, here’s what I found about doing a messy updo. I found a lot of pictures of stars with a haircolor that is similar to mine, like Kate Beckinsale and Eva Longoria, with their hair in sweeping, naturally tousled updos that I really liked, and when I went further to try to find out how that type of look is achieved, I pretty much found consistently that rubber bands aren’t really used.

Rather, stylists recommend that when you’re going for this type of a look, you use the longer hair pins instead, taking random sections of the hair and pinning them to the sides and back of your head, so that you create a more natural, random look that is piecey and frames pretty much any type of facial shape pretty well. The messier updos are universal, no matter what your face shape is, whereas tightly pulled back, more formal dos only tend to look even halfway right on women with very good bone structure and almost perfect facial symmetry. Since that definitely doesn’t apply to the majority of us, the messy updo is the perfectly versatile style for events.

I went out and bought several cards of the longer bobby pins, in black, to match my hair color so they don’t stick out like a sore thumb like the blond ones do which are copper in color. You can usually find the longer bobby pins at most drug stores in the hair accessories section, however, I did have a hard time finding them at Wal-Mart and Target. Not sure if that’s just a problem by me or not, but I found them at local CVS drugstores pretty easily.

If you want to create some additional texture, you can go to bed the night before with your hair slightly damp and some leave in spray conditioner in, I like the Rusk Brilliance leave in spray conditioner myself, and twist your hair into a high bun on the head. This creates fun ringlets in the morning and helps eliminate frizz and flyaways, but creates a unique texture that adds to the allure of a messy updo.
