I really like chewing gum.  I go through periods where I’ll hardly chew it at all though, and I’ll switch to instead popping breath freshening mints. I love the breath freshening that gum offers, and I also love that it occupies my mouth, since I tend to have somewhat of an oral fixation anyways, and I would probably eat a lot more food if it weren’t for gum!  However, I just read some rather disturbing conclusions that some cosmetic surgeons have come to about this pastime.

Apparently, some cosmetic dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons think that chewing gum on a regular basis can actually make your facial wrinkles worse.  They say that the negative and constant motion of chewing gum helps to create fine lines around the mouth.  Hmm, I do have some fine lines around my mouth, but I though that was just because I was 35 and that’s just what happens.

Honestly, who knows, but it’s worth a look into if you’re an avid gum chewer to maybe cut down a bit on the habit if you can.  They also say that gum chewing can actually overstimulate and over use your facial muscles, which can lead to pulling the skin down more and aging your skin more. It also can interfere with the longevity of dermal fillers such as restylane and perlane, since it breaks them down quicker.

So if you’re a woman who gets facial fillers to help prevent aging signs, then you may really want to cut gum chewing out or down since it could be costing you a mint.  No pun intended. I swear.
