SELF TANNERS : THE MODERN DAY BEAUTY ESSENTIAL
Do you want that natural, tan glow that makes you feel about a hundred times better about yourself, camouflages your imperfections, and gets you complements that you look refreshed and like you’ve been on vacation?
You see, the ironic part about looking tan is that being tan makes you look “healthy”, and yet tanning in the sun or in a tanning bed is one of the worst things you can do to your skin. It accelerates aging, and give us sun spots, age spots, and even can dry out our skin or make acne worse, and it also can aggravates skin conditions like rosacea.
But you love looking tan – you look great and feel great when you’re tan right? This was the dilemma I found myself in after I got two precancerous spots removed from years of abusing the sun and tanning booths.
How could I be pale the rest of my life? Then, thank God, they improved on self tanners so much that I didn’t need to rely on the sun or tanning beds any more, I could use a good self tanner, and look exactly as if I’d been in the sun – even better.
The best part was, I would never burn my skin, get freckles or age spots, or any precancerous sun spots, nor would I subject my skin to the damaging free radicals that give women and men that “leathery” look that comes along with a lifetime of sun exposure abuse.
All the hottest Hollywood celebrities use self tanners, and you can barely tell. Paris Hilton, Jennifer Aniston, Charlize Theron, Jessica Simpson, and virtually every Hollywood starlet use self tanners, and they use them often, in lieu of tanning in the sun or beds.
They know how precious their skin is, and how badly the sun and sun exposure can mar their flawless complexions, so they’ve turned to self tanning, just like scores of other regular women, just like you and me.
OK, now that I’ve preached the self tanning gospel and probably annoyed the heck out of you, I’m going to give you some good pointers on how to get the most bang for your buck with these self tanning products, and also how to apply them so that they will look perfectly natural and gorgeous.
TIPS FOR SELF TANNING 101
-
First rule of thumb with choosing a self tanner. Make sure you get a tinted formula. Without a tint, you can’t see what areas you’ve covered and which areas still need a little more attention. Also, I prefer either a mousse-type formula or tinted cream, as the sprays tend to fade strangely. That’s just my preference though.
- Make sure you have thoroughly washed your body as well as exfoliated with a loofah or some other type of exfoliating tool. I believe there are now gloves that you can put on that will exfoliate your whole body as well that work pretty well. Exfoliation helps the self tanner to stay on longer and also to adhere to the skin better without any interference from sweat, oil or dirt.
- Make sure you have a good makeup pad to apply the tanner to the tops of your hands when you’d washed them, as well as your face. You can choose to buy a facial self tanner as well, although I have used body self tanners on my face before and it’s turned out fine too.
- Even if you think you’re overdoing it, be sure to rub in extra cream in places where you may not have gotten enough. It really takes a lot of cream in one application to truly get your whole body covered and to have the tan look right. Don’t skimp – you’ll only end up with a speckled, oddly faded tan right away.
- Be sure to get the areas that aren’t obvious like your back and behind your ears. Ever seen someone with white behind their ears and tan everywhere else? This is a dead self tan giveaway. Don’t fall into that trap.
- Use the self tanner sparingly on your drier areas. Your heals and any other rough areas will absorbe the tanner differently, and you may end up looking orange there.
- Be sure to get the face and neck evenly with the self tanner. To get one more than the other would mean that your neck may look paler than your face, and this is a huge beauty oops. Be generous on your neck and decolletage, as this area is a little more difficult to get the pigment soaked in, so it requires a little more product.
